To a handful of photographers out there, studio lighting and OCF can feel unfamiliar or intimidating to use. I find myself drawn to studio portraits every so often and it seems like a I keep having to re-familiarize myself every time I start setting up. With that in mind, when I have spare time I like to test out different lighting setups.
I usually tend to lean more towards moody and low-key lighting so I decided to stick to a black background. I next set up the large overhead key (Elinchrom Rotalux Octabox 175cm (69”) N° 26649), exposing for the subject.
2nd came a Profoto D1 with a large Rectabox camera left and up at a 45° down as my primary fill . In hindsight I wish I would have flagged off this light slightly on the left side of the modifier to prevent light spilling onto the background.
Last I added a white v-flat camera right to slightly fill in the left side of the subject.
Overall I’m super pleased with how to lighting looks. I ended up modifying this lighting setup slightly for a headshot session and it worked wonderfully.
